Bardo: A Hidden Jewel Amidst London’s RESTAURANT Richness

There’s nothing more thrilling, yet at the same time frustrating than navigating London’s culinary maze, trying to settle on where to eat. If you’ve ever wandered through this city’s bustling gastronomic landscape, you’ll understand the simultaneous delight and challenge of choosing a dining destination. And while London, rich in history and vibrancy, boasts a myriad of dining options, I have come to realise that settling on one can sometimes feel like a herculean task. However, within this labyrinth, the reward lies in the satisfaction of stumbling upon or intentionally choosing a spot that elevates your dining adventure to something beyond the ordinary.

Like Bardo St James’s. An Italian find in the St James’s part of Central London. Tucked between the iconic Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, this gem has become my occasional sanctuary whenever I crave a special treat. Despite the city’s saturated gastronomic scene, where many establishments seem to blur into a repetitive offering, Bardo stands out, offering an experience that resonates with charm and uniqueness. Aspects I am always on the lookout for in a place.

Since its grand opening back in September 2021, Bardo has seamlessly positioned itself as the go-to haven for enthusiasts of refined indulgence. Embodying the essence of La Dolce Vita as its guiding principle, Bardo has masterfully orchestrated an irresistible allure, successfully beckoning crowds who yearn for the epitome of opulence and the art of sophisticated living.

But what consistently draws me to this Italian gem is its fusion of soul-stirring music, diverse culinary delights, historic ambience, and impeccable service. For me, it’s not just a dining spot; it’s a holistic gastronomic journey tailored for the discerning modern diner like myself.

My Favourite Aspects
The Food

If you’re up for a taste adventure through Italy, Bardo’s menu is the perfect guide in the heart of London. It’s like a culinary tour, offering something for everyone. From the crispier and lighter pinsas to a variety of pasta that hits the spot, the menu is a treasure trove of Italian flavours. Signature dishes like Polenta and Yellowtail showcase expert craftsmanship from Chef Graziano Bonacina the Executive Chef at Bardo. But if we’re to talk about personal favourites, then for me, the real stars are the Merluzzo Nero (Black Cod) and Cacio e Pepe. The Black Cod stands out with its rich and unmatched flavour, perfectly complemented by the indulgent Cacio e Pepe. And for dessert, the Tiramisu is the sweet finale to an unforgettable dining experience at Bardo.

The Atmosphere

The ambience at Bardo beautifully evokes the elegant style of the 1950s and 1960s, reminiscent of the iconic “La Dolce Vita” era. It’s a time capsule that transports you back to Italy’s golden age — an era marked by chic sophistication, hedonistic pleasures, and a carefree embrace of the good life. What particularly appeals to me is the serene atmosphere, a stark contrast to many bustling modern venues. Its attraction to a more mature clientele resonates with my own sensibilities. Being an old soul, I find myself perfectly at home in such a setting.

Bardo live music band
Live Music

As someone who loves pairing music with my culinary experiences, I find that few places in London provide classic entertainment that can nostalgically transport me back in time the way Bardo does. The live music there doesn’t just play in the background; it’s a presence that resonates, capturing the very essence of the ‘La Dolce Vita’ era. I can almost see the chic cafés and hear the laughter of a time when life was lived with a stylish flair. It’s more than ambient sound; it’s a soulful backdrop that enhances the dining experience, allowing me to forge a genuine connection with the place and immerse myself in a moment that’s both timeless and elegant.

The Service

The staff’s attention to detail at Bardo is unparalleled, beginning with the almost secret entrance that leads you down the steps to the foyer reception, and continuing through to the table service. Every gesture is executed with grace, and every need is anticipated with a subtle understanding. The service is impeccable, yet never feels mechanical or overly formal. It goes beyond mere hospitality; it feels personal, intimate, and tailored to the individual. For me, such attentive service can elevate a dining experience from mere satisfaction to pure delight, making a return visit not just a consideration but almost an inevitable longing.

Decor With Depth

Stepping into Bardo is akin to embarking on a visual odyssey, one where elegance and artistry guide the way. From the moment you enter, you’re greeted by the sparkling allure of Christal chandeliers, each one a beacon leading you further into a world of refined taste. The marbled floors reflect not just the soft, ambient lighting but also a deep-rooted commitment to excellence. Every detail, no matter how subtle, echoes a sophistication that speaks volumes, embracing you in an atmosphere where the very best is not just offered but celebrated.

Just a word to the wise – booking ahead is a smart move, particularly if you’re eyeing a weekend treat!
