As Summer Ends, Here Are The Essential Trench Coats You’ll Need to Transition For Autumn

A woman confidently models a grey trench coat, paired with wide-leg trousers, a white cropped top, and platform lace-up boots, standing on urban stairs.

Look, I know I’m probably a little early to the trench coats party, but please hear me out. If you live in the UK, you know that our summer tends to feel more like a brief interlude than an actual full season. I mean, we’ve already had our designated full week of sunshine and now, it’s back to the familiar chill that has us reaching for our coats again. Blimey! While some of you might still be enjoying those lingering rays of summer, the reality is that Autumn is just around the corner for all of us. And if you happen to fall in my camp – someone who loves being ahead of the curve —except when it comes to early mornings, of course —you’ve likely started considering how to transition your wardrobe for the cooler months ahead. And nothing signals the arrival of fall quite like the trench coat. A wardrobe staple that comfortably bridges the gap between seasons.

The Quintessential Beige Coat

You can’t go wrong with classic beige trench coats. It’s been a fashion staple for ages and, for good reason. The neutral colour complements pretty much everything. Which in essence is perfect for those unpredictable autumn days, when you’re not quite sure what the weather will bring. So if you’re out there shopping for one, pick one with a belt to cinch in your waist and add a touch of class to your outfit.

If you’re into something modern, with a contemporary twist, then an oversized trench coat is the way to go. Not only is it comfy and stylish, but it’s also ideal for layering over those chunky sweaters when it gets chilly. Go for muted colours like khaki and or olive green to stay on trend while keeping things versatile.

A leather trench coat is best if and when you want to make a statement. It’s bold and adds a bit of an edge to your fall outfits. For the ultimate look, pair it with skinny jeans, a nice pair of quality pumps or ankle boots. Do this, and you’ll be turning heads when you walk into any room. Now black leather is always a classic, but don’t be afraid to try a deep burgundy, brown, or even forest green for something different.

The Double-Breasted Trench

For a more polished and structured look, the double-breasted trench is the winner and the mother of all trench coats. It’s just perfect for work or anytime you want to look a bit more dressed up. And the double-breasted design in itself adds a touch of formality and creates a flattering silhouette. Try to stick to classic colours like navy or camel to make sure it stays in your wardrobe for years to come.

The Chic Cropped Trench

For a fresh take on the classic trench, try a cropped version.

I like this style because it’s perfect for showing off your outfit underneath. It also adds a touch of playfulness to your overall look and makes a statement about your style. And the best thing, for those warmer autumn days, you don’t have to go around carrying a heavy coat with you. So when you don’t need a full-length coat, bring along your cropped option that can also fit nicely in your handbag.
