Why I’m Choosing a Word of the Year Over Resolutions This year

Well, here we are again.

Another January filled with the usual suspects: Veganuary, Dry January, new gym memberships, and endless promises to lose weight, save money, and finally get organized. It’s the same routine every year, isn’t it? We start off with grand plans, only to feel the excitement fizzle out by February. Doesn’t it all start to feel… repetitive? Predictable? Maybe even a little boring?

I’ve been there—writing out long lists of resolutions, thinking, This is the year I get it all right. But the truth is, those lists often end up abandoned, gathering dust while life carries on as usual. And honestly, I’m over it.

This year, however, I have decided I’m doing something different. I’m not writing resolutions. Instead, I’ve chosen a Word of the Year—a single, powerful word to guide me, inspire me, and remind me what I’m striving for in 2025.

That word? Change.

Why “Change”?

Because, let me tell you, there are so many things I need to change this year, even if it’s just a little bit. I want this blog to grow—because sharing my thoughts and connecting with you all brings me joy. I want (and desperately need) my savings to grow, which means reevaluating my spending habits and learning to say “no” to things I don’t truly need. I need, perhaps, a career change—because sitting here today, staring at these same four walls, I know there’s something more fulfilling out there waiting for me.

So yes, CHANGE will be my word for 2025.

But why a Word of the Year instead of the usual resolutions? After all, resolutions seem like the classic way to start fresh, right? For me, it’s because resolutions have always felt rigid—like a strict to-do list that doesn’t leave room for life’s twists and turns. A Word of the Year, on the other hand, feels expansive. It’s a mindset, not a mandate. It’s a way to keep evolving, no matter what life throws my way.

Why I’m Choosing a Word of the Year

Let me ask you this: how many New Year’s resolutions from past years do you actually remember—or, more importantly, stick to? If you’re anything like me, the answer is probably “not many.” Resolutions are often crafted with the best of intentions, but they tend to feel rigid, overwhelming, and all-or-nothing. That’s why, this year, I’m choosing a Word of the Year instead.

A Word of the Year feels different. It’s flexible. Resolutions demand precision: lose X pounds, save X dollars, achieve X milestone. But life doesn’t always follow such a strict script, and that’s where a word like change comes in. It gives me room to grow in multiple directions. It’s not about ticking off boxes; it’s about making progress, no matter how small.

It’s holistic, too. Resolutions usually focus on one narrow area—fitness, finances, or career. But life isn’t lived in compartments. A Word of the Year applies to everything: my habits, my mindset, my relationships, and even my creativity. It’s a theme that ties all parts of my life together.

Most importantly, a Word of the Year is motivational. Resolutions can feel like obligations, weighing you down with their shoulds and musts. A Word of the Year, on the other hand, feels like a promise—a reminder of what’s possible. Every time I think about change, it inspires me to try something new or step outside my comfort zone. It’s not about pressure; it’s about potential.

Finally, a Word of the Year is forgiving. With resolutions, slipping up often feels like failure. Miss one gym day, and the whole plan seems ruined. But a Word of the Year gives me grace. It’s not about perfection—it’s about direction. It’s a reminder to keep moving forward, even if progress is slow.

For me, change will show up in the small, daily choices I make. It’s saying no to impulse purchases so I can grow my savings. It’s updating my résumé and taking the leap toward a new career. It’s prioritizing this blog, transforming it into a meaningful space where I can connect and create.

It’s not about overnight transformations or sweeping gestures. It’s about choosing something different—something better—every day. That’s the power of change.

What Does “Change” Mean for Me in 2025?

Well, this year, change will guide me in ways both big and small. It’s in the little decisions—like skipping that unnecessary purchase or waking up an hour earlier to write. It’s in the bold moves—like exploring new job opportunities or reimagining what this blog could become.

Change is about breaking free from routine and giving myself permission to grow. It’s not just about achieving goals; it’s about evolving into the person I want to be.

How You Can Choose Your Own Word of the Year

So, if you’re tired of the same old resolutions, consider trying this instead. Here’s how to find a word that resonates with you:

  1. Reflect on What You Want
What do you truly need this year? More growth? Stability? Adventure? Let your goals guide you.
  2. Keep It Simple
Choose a word that feels intuitive and meaningful to you. It doesn’t have to be complicated.
  3. Make It Visible
Write your word somewhere you’ll see it daily—on your mirror, in your planner, or as your phone background.

So, that’s my plan for 2025. No resolutions, no strict rules—just one word: change.

And I can already feel the difference.

What about you? Are you sticking with resolutions, or does the idea of a Word of the Year resonate with you? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
